Zain Bhikha broke the nasheed and music scene in 1994 with his much acclaimed debut A Way of Life. His initial success and the immediate recognition of his talents brought him to association and work with Yusuf Islam and others. Hailing from Johannesburg, South Africa his formative years experienced the realities of apartheid years. Unsurprisingly, his socio-spiritual works stand in stark contrast to that era and from the very beginning he has become a global icon for Muslims, in particular with a dozen of moving albums to his credit. This contemporary artist draws inspiration from a variety of sources such as his own travels, children, country and African culture, Muslim history, the Sirah and the Qur’an. Importantly, his composition also draws from his personal experiences and sentiments such as Mountains of Makkah, by far his most popular and powerful album, based on his pilgrimage; the lyrics of which echo his insightful spiritual journey. His album Hope consists of a contemporary and urban combination with a strong reminiscence of African culture. In it he deals with various issues such as destitution, famine and homelessness.
