Grief and sadness are difficult for any person to take, let alone children who have lost a parent. To grow up without a father by one’s side is one of the hardest challenges of life. Due to this hardship, there is great reward in Islam for taking care of orphans (an orphan is a child whose father has passed away). The Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) said: “I and the one who takes care of an orphan will be like these two on the Day of Judgment.’ And he raised his index and middle finger together (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).

Sadness and struggle are a necessary part of life that none can avoid. However, depending on how one reacts to those struggles, one can end up benefitting greatly from such difficulties during one’s life, along with being greatly rewarded for one’s patience in the afterlife. One way Islam teaches people to face the death of close relatives is to remember that this life is short. This life is nothing but a bridge to an eternal and more important life.
